TRIBUTE IN HONOUR OF MRS. EVELYN TAY
BY THE DIVISION OF PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY, KATH/KNUST-KUMASI
She Shall be Praised
Proverbs 31: 29-31
“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord deserves praise. Honour her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate”
It was sad news for us to hear that Mrs. Evelyn Tay had passed on! We have indeed lost a great personality and a mentor that had been a “giant stall” right from the very beginning of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery & Burns Unit at KATH/KNUST, Kumasi.

The inception of this humble unit which has now grown into a large Division, providing first class and excellent health care in the world renowned classy discipline of modern plastic surgery under the inspiration of Professor Jack Mustarde, Mrs. Evelyn Tay, Professor Arthur Morris, Professor Martin Webster, Professor Edward Yeboah, Professor Josiah Hiadzi, etc would not have materialized without the special forceful roles of Mrs. Tay. She worked extremely hard, tirelessly to make sure we got to top of every situation. Her efforts have resulted in all achievements of the Division today.

Mrs. Tay, as we affectionately called her, until her demise, coordinated between the Rotary Club of Dundee, Scotland and the Key members of the International Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Ghana Project. We therefore cannot talk about the establishment of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit at KATH without the mention of her.

Whenever there was the need for a nurse or a doctor to be trained outside Ghana in plastic surgery and burns, Mrs. Tay never left any stone unturned to ensure acquisition of all the required travelling documents.

She was hospitable and motherly to all and sundry who knocked at her door especially nurses sojourning abroad to undertake training courses. Her tenderly advise and cares were invaluable.

Mrs. Tay, though you are departing to your Maker, we on the other hand shall continue to lay bare your achievements for the future generation.
Rain drops are trickling down our faces as we wipe away the tears. You were a gift from God above. You’ll never be forgotten because you’ll forever remain a statue in our hearts.
Farewell thee, our mother and friend!
Rest in Perfect Peace, Mrs. Tay, in the bosom of the Lord!

TRIBUTE FOR MRS EVELYN TAY BY THE BOARD AND MANAGEMENT OF THE KORLE BU TEACHING HOSPITAL
Mrs. Evelyn Tay has been associated with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for a long time and has made significant contributions on the growth and development of the Hospital. Her contributions are unique and highly impactful.
The first notable contribution of Mrs. Tay to the Hospital was in mobilizing both human and material resources for the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery & Burns Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. This has enabled the local training of plastics surgeons and the eventual establishment of other plastic surgery units and centres across the country and within the West African sub-region.
Mrs. Tay was also instrumental in mobilizing and paving the way for the construction of the Moorfields Eye Centre. This Centre was conceived as a sub-regional hub for the training and treatment of an estimated 2.6 million blind people within the West African Sub-region.
She was working for the commissioning of the Centre just before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Even at a time that Mrs. Tay had lost some of her infectious energy in organizing and mobilizing resources, she also accepted an offer to work as a Trustee of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Trust Fund.
She has also made numerous donations of medical equipment and consumables for the running of the Hospital particularly at times that some of the items were difficult to come by.
The last donation of such items was when she worked with staff of the British High Commission to donate assorted items to the Paediatric Oncology Unit in 2018.
The foregoing contributions of Mrs. Tay are indicative of the fact that she was a true friend of Korle Bu. Her name will be indelibly etched in the annals of the Hospital as someone who came and contributed in a unique way to the progress of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
May she rest in perfect peace.

Auntie Evelyn, you were so kind to me when I was ill and took the time to get me to meet a specialist from Moorfields. you have no idea how it helped me to feel confident that I would get better. You were one of those people who just gave and gave your works impacted on the lives of many. Rest well. Mummy will miss you.
